Our Innovative Culinary Arts Program
Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds, a Lifelong Skill
Experience and research show that there is a correlation between the health of our student’s minds and bodies. This is part of the reason we have introduced an innovative Culinary Arts program at Sedona Sky therapeutic boarding school. The other reasons: it’s a great experience and the students love it!
Many of us learn by doing, so to talk about good nutrition or how to make a great pancake without doing– where is the fun in that?
In our Culinary Arts program students have the chance to learn by doing, to get “in there”, and to see the benefits of their efforts with a delicious meal or snack.
Students advance through both basic and masters level culinary arts elective classes at Sedona Sky which is something that we feel sets us apart from other residential treatment centers. As part of our focus on wellness students learn the value of healthy foods through this experience.
Students help prepare lunches for their classmates and create intricate deserts for special occasions in our state-of-the-art commercial kitchen.
Judy Haddon, a culinary artist with 20 years of experience, heads this popular program. We always try to respond to the interests and needs of our students as well as provide new ways to build skills and confidence.
Our Culinary Program led by Judy, who brings her expertise in cooking and teaching, is another way in which Sedona Sky is meeting the changing needs of our students.
An Art Form and a Science
Cooking is as much science as it is art. The science is about how ingredients interact, what temperature and time does to change structure and texture, and how the final product will be appreciated by the consumer – how it looks, smells, feels and tastes.
Not many other art forms use all of the senses in their presentation, and certainly none of them are so hastily disposed of.
