Arts

Our Extensive Arts Program

Encourages Creativity, Confidence and Self-Expression

At Sedona Sky Academy, we believe that creative pursuits and cultural education are part of a well-rounded life. Our young ladies love having the chance to express themselves in different ways and share their artistic gifts with our community.

Whether performing on stage or finishing their latest painting, girls build confidence by showcasing just what they are capable of.

We have integrated the arts to foster creative expression, and to provide another outlet geared at building confidence in our students.

Sedona Sky Academy has always attracted some very talented teen students, many with a lot of artistic abilities. We have always embraced these capacities, and increased their learning with an outstanding visual arts program.

Visual Arts

We offer art courses that introduce students to various techniques and styles of art.

With pencil, acrylic paint, oil pastels, charcoal, paper mache, and clay, students explore fundamental ideas such as line, shape, color, space, texture, and balance.

Other girls have created beautiful self-portraits, still lifes, and landscapes, as well as sculptures and even plans for interior design.

Our instructors also cover the history of art itself, guiding girls through the most significant and compelling elements in the long story of human culture.

Performing Arts

Choir – Choral students are introduced to the basics of vocal technique and individual and ensemble singing. They learn songs from a standard choral repertoire, as well as show tunes, folk tunes, and inspirationals.
The girls are introduced to the lives and music of great composers, and are taught elements of music appreciation. Typically, students in this class perform in public, both on-campus and off-campus.

Drama Our drama courses are designed for the novice as well as the seasoned trouper. Students explore core dramatic concepts such as monologue, improvisation, audition techniques, scene studies, and character development. Furthermore, teen girls have the opportunity to learn stage management, scenic design, costuming, and other technical aspects of theater production. Typically, those in this class will perform a full-scale theater production for the school, as well as smaller skits and shows off-campus.

Shakespeare For interested students, we offer a special focus on Shakespeare’s tragedies, comedies, and histories from a performance and theatrical stance. As an aid to understanding, the English language of the Elizabethan era is studied and practiced in some depth. Students memorize and perform major sections from selected plays, and typically present a full-scale production of one Shakespeare play toward the end of the semester. During the summer, Sedona Sky Academy students foster an appreciation for the arts at the Utah Shakespearean Festival.

Girls in Shakespeare Play at Treatment Center

Musical theater Students investigate the operatic roots of the musical play, and become familiar with the works of prominent composers of the genre such as Verdi, Mozart, Wagner, Bizet, and Puccini.

This class culminates in the full-scale production of a musical for the school.

Culinary Arts

As one of the top programs for troubled teens, we strive to help our girls get healthier.  We also promote that our girls have accountability and responsibility for themselves.  Our culinary arts program is the perfect convergence of these goals, as our girls learn the basics of cooking in order to make foods they love and learn about better nutrition by “doing”.

Led by a culinary arts instructor with a passion for helping others and years of experience teaching cooking, our Sedona Sky students love the opportunity to make great food.

Culinary Arts at Residential Treatment Center

From year to year, we also offer other artistic pursuits and opportunities to explore culture. These programs are a real treasure to the Sedona Sky community, educating and entertaining students while giving them new ways to relax and enjoy life.
